Classified as a Historic Monument, its origins date back to the eighth century. It takes its name from a relic of Saint–Ladre (or Saint–Lazare) in the form of a cranial bone supposedly bequeathed by Henri le Grand Duke of Burgundy. The church has undergone many changes over time, but you can still see the 24 elders of the Apocalypse of St. John, the works of the months, and the signs of the zodiac on the tympanum of the central portal. Inside, a central nave flanked by two side aisles is overlooked by an organ installed in 1850 (modified in 1890).
This discovery walk, identified on the ground by bronze arrows, is accompanied by a booklet available at the Tourist Information Office. It takes you on a journey through time, at your own pace and according to your desires!
But why a frog?
The frog, sculpted in local stone, has been overlooking Saint–Lazare church since 2006. Since then, young and old alike have been falling in love with this sculpture made by Yvan Baudoin, so much so that it has become Avallon’s mascot !
